Air temperature versus experience
Actual temperature is the measured air temperature. Feels-like temperature is an estimate intended to make the forecast more practical for people outdoors.
Heat index and wind chill
In warm, humid conditions, the heat index reflects that sweat evaporates less efficiently. In cold, windy conditions, wind chill reflects faster heat loss from exposed skin. These calculations are most useful within the conditions for which they were designed.
Why the same temperature feels different
Two places can have the same air temperature but different wind, humidity, cloud cover, clothing, and activity levels. That is why the feels-like value should support—not replace—common-sense decisions.
What this means for your day
Use air temperature to understand the atmosphere and feels-like temperature to decide what the conditions may feel like during your planned activity.
